Trading on an SMP without getting scammed
Almost no SMP has trade escrow. You hand over items and hope, which means the structure of the trade is your only protection. These are the shapes that work.
The four safe structures
- A chest shop. The server plugin holds the goods and takes the money atomically. Always the safest option and always worth preferring.
- The auction house. Same reason: the server is the counterparty, not the player.
- Split delivery. For large deals with no plugin: half, half, half, half. Nobody can take more than a quarter and walk.
- A trusted third party. A staff member or a known long-standing player holding both sides. Only as good as the third party's reputation, so pick someone with something to lose.
The structures that get people
- "You first." The entire scam, in two words. If someone insists, they are telling you what they intend.
- Trading through a trust or coop invite. Adding someone to your claim to "collect" is granting them everything in it.
- Deals moved off-server. Real money, other games, anything the server cannot see. No recourse by design.
- Rushed trades. Urgency is manufactured precisely to skip the structure above.
Real-money trading
Selling in-game items for real money is against the rules on nearly every server, unenforceable, and the single most common route to being scammed and having no complaint anyone will hear. It is also usually a punishable offence for you, not just for them.
If it happens anyway
Screenshot the chat with timestamps, note the exact time, and open a ticket. Some servers have transaction logs and will act; many will say player-to-player trades are at your own risk, which is why the structure mattered. Either way, report it in public afterwards, because a scammer's reputation is the only durable protection a community has.
