Lifesteal SMP mechanics explained

On a lifesteal SMP your maximum hearts are the stake. Killing another player permanently transfers one of their hearts to you. Dying gives one away. Reach zero and you are banned from the server until somebody revives you or you buy your way back.

The core rules

  • Transfer on kill. Usually one heart, sometimes scaled. Only player kills count; falling in lava costs you a heart with nobody gaining it on most configurations.
  • A cap. Servers cap maximum hearts, commonly at twenty or forty, so a dominant player cannot become literally unkillable.
  • Elimination at zero. The defining rule. Without it, lifesteal is just a scoreboard.
  • Revival. A craftable or purchasable item that brings an eliminated player back, usually consuming hearts from whoever uses it.

Why it changes how people play

Because trust becomes a resource. A stranger asking to team is making a proposition with real stakes on both sides, and the social layer that grows out of that, alliances, betrayals, protection rackets, bounty lists, is the actual content. The building is incidental. If you want to build in peace, this is the wrong genre and no amount of good design will change that.

The thing to check first

How hard revival is. If revival items are craftable at a cost the average player can reach, elimination is a setback and the loop is a game. If the only realistic route back is the store, elimination is a sales funnel. This single question separates good lifesteal servers from predatory ones, and you can answer it by asking in chat before you play.

Common variations

  • Heart items. Hearts as tradeable physical items, which creates a market.
  • Withdraw and deposit. Converting your own hearts to items and back, letting you bank them.
  • Bounties. Server-tracked rewards for killing a specific player.
  • Safe zones. A spawn area where transfer is disabled, so new players are not farmed.
  • Seasons. Most lifesteal servers reset, because a settled heart distribution is boring.

Several entries on our ranking run lifesteal, and the ranking page groups them under their own heading so you can find them without reading every entry.
