SMP ranks and stores: reading the pay-to-win line
Every SMP sells something. The argument is never whether a store exists, it is what the store sells, and there is a single test that settles it.
The test
Is anything in the store unobtainable in game? If everything on sale is also earnable through playing, the store sells time. If some things are exclusive to it, the store sells power. Both are legitimate business models and only one of them is what people mean by pay-to-win.
What stores usually sell, ranked by how much it matters
- Claim blocks or claim area. The most consequential, because it directly affects whether your build is safe.
- Economy multipliers. Directly buys progression speed.
- Gear or kits with real items. Compresses the early game, and flattens it for everyone if the top kit is strong.
- Home slots, teleport cooldowns, extra sethomes. Convenience, and the tier most people happily pay for.
- Cosmetics, chat colours, pets, particles. Uncontroversial.
The signals of a fair store
- A free first rank, granted on join rather than sold. A server confident in its content does not need to gate the first tier.
- A visible in-game route to every purchasable rank, even a slow one.
- Ranks that expire never, and seasons that grant them again after a reset.
- Published perk lists per rank, so you can see what you are buying before you buy it.
The signals to be wary of
- The strongest item in the game only in a crate only bought with money.
- Claim blocks purchasable but not earnable.
- Permanent stacking multipliers on sale with no cap.
- A sale banner in the server message. Not damning on its own, but worth noticing what a server leads with.
On our number one at play.talonmc.net, ranks and crates are earnable through
play and /freerank grants one on your first join. It does also sell progression boosts, which is why
our entry calls it paid acceleration rather than paid power rather than claiming it sells nothing.
Considering something else? TalonMC is our #1
