Land claims and protection: what each system actually stops

A land claim marks a region as yours so other players cannot break blocks inside it. That is the guarantee. Everything else, container access, PvP, mob damage, expiry, varies per server, and the gaps are where bases get lost.

How claims are earned

Usually claim blocks accumulated through playtime, sometimes bought with in-game money, occasionally a fixed allowance per player. Playtime-based systems reward the players a server wants; purely purchasable ones do not.

What a claim usually stops

  • Block breaking and placing by non-trusted players.
  • Container access, on most but not all configurations. Check this specifically.
  • Mob griefing: creeper holes, enderman theft, sometimes fire spread.
  • Fluid flow from outside the claim, on better configurations. This one is frequently missing, and a lava or water channel dug up to your border is a genuine and common exploit.

Where claims leak

  • PvP. Claims protect blocks, not you. On many servers a player can walk in and kill you next to your own chests.
  • Depth. If the claim does not run bedrock to sky, a tunnel underneath is legal.
  • Trust. Every protection system is defeated by trusting the wrong person. This is the most common real cause of base loss on well-protected servers and no plugin can help.
  • Expiry. Most servers release claims after a period of inactivity, commonly two to eight weeks. Reasonable policy, nasty surprise. Ask the number.

"Grief protected" is a claim, not a mechanic

You will see the phrase on server listings constantly. It might mean a full claim plugin, a staff rollback tool, or simply that griefing is against the rules. All three are worth something and they are not equivalent. The version worth having is block logging plus staff who respond, because that combination restores a base rather than merely punishing whoever wrecked it. Ask how far back the logs go; days or weeks is normal, and damage discovered later may be unrecoverable even with good staff.

The five questions

  1. How long does a claim survive inactivity?
  2. Does it block container access, or only block breaking?
  3. Is PvP enabled inside claims?
  4. Does it stop fluid flow from outside?
  5. Is there block logging, and how far back?
