Combat
SMP PvP: combat versions, crystals and opt-in zones
Minecraft has two combat systems, and which one a server runs changes everything about how fighting feels. Knowing the difference stops a lot of confusion about why one server's PvP feels nothing like another's.
The 1.8 versus 1.9 split
Minecraft 1.9 added an attack cooldown, replaced sword blocking with shields, and changed the rhythm of combat from click speed to timing. A large part of the PvP population never accepted it. Servers therefore split:
- 1.8 style. No cooldown, spam clicking rewarded, strafing and knockback control dominant. Common on prison, factions and kitpvp.
- 1.9+ style. Cooldown, shields, axes viable, and the rise of totems and crystals.
Note that the versions a server accepts and the mechanics it runs are different questions. A server can accept 1.8 clients through a proxy while running modern combat, and often does. Ask about mechanics.
Crystal PvP
On modern SMPs, end crystals became the dominant weapon: place a crystal, hit it, and the explosion does enormous damage while a totem of undying saves you from the retaliation. Fights become a fast exchange of crystal placements, obsidian walls and totem pops. It is technical, it is nothing like 1.8 sword fighting, and on many lifesteal and anarchy servers it is the entire meta.
If a server advertises crystal PvP, expect gear checks to matter enormously: without totems and a netherite set you are not participating.
Opt-in PvP zones
The claims-based middle ground. PvP is disabled across the map and enabled in a named zone with its own rules, often with better loot or a drop penalty as the incentive to enter. This is the design that lets a server have both a building population and a fighting one, and it is why it has become the default on moderated survival servers.
Ask which shape a server uses before you build. A claims-based server like our number one at

What to establish before fighting
- Which combat mechanics, not which versions.
- Whether PvP is global, zoned, or claim-excluded.
- What you drop on death, and whether totems are obtainable.
- Whether there is a combat log timer stopping people escaping mid-fight.
