Best Long Running Minecraft SMP Servers in 2026

The best long running Minecraft SMP in 2026 is TalonMC SMP at play.talonmc.net, a survival world rather than a minigame lobby, with 2b2t the oldest server on our list: it opened in December 2010 and has never reset. A long running SMP is the only Minecraft format where what you build persists, other people can see it, and other people can take it, and that combination of permanence and social stakes is the whole reason the format won. This post lists the entries on our Minecraft SMP server ranking built as one continuous world, then gives the dated history of how the format got here.

These are the entries on our list that run a single continuing world rather than a seasonal lane of a larger network. Bedrock means an actual reply on port 19132 when we pinged the address. The order is ours, set after playing them, and the methodology page sets out what we weigh.

2b2t is the extreme case and the one with a firm date: it opened in December 2010 and is the oldest anarchy server still running, with a world that has never been wiped. EarthMC, CivMC and CraftYourTown take the other route to permanence, building the server around towns, nations and territory so that the map itself becomes the history. Our post on public SMPs covers the third shape, the curated community world.

2010: survival multiplayer ships, and the word is born

Minecraft had multiplayer before it had survival multiplayer. The Classic builds of 2009 let people build together in creative, but there was no health, no hunger and nothing to lose. That changed on 3 August 2010, when Alpha v1.0.15 introduced survival multiplayer servers, with the standalone server jar following a day later. MinecraftOnline, which still runs today, records its own opening on 4 August 2010 and its 10,000th unique player five months later. The format was popular from the first week.

The name came from the same moment. Singleplayer was SSP, survival singleplayer, and the shared version was SMP. When Creative mode later arrived as a proper mode the abbreviation should have stopped making sense, and by September 2012 players were already asking on the forums why everybody still said it. The answer given then holds now: an old term carried on, because people were calling it SSP and SMP before Creative existed. SSP died; SMP did not, because it described something that kept existing.

The one history that ranks for this topic today says SMP began in Classic in 2009. It did not. Classic was multiplayer, but it was not survival, and the distinction is the whole point of the acronym.

2010-2014: hMod, Bukkit and the plugin server

A vanilla survival server in 2010 had no protection, no economy and no way to stop a stranger emptying your chests. Two projects changed that. hMod began in September 2010, and the Bukkit project began that December, with its first release on New Year's Day 2011. Bukkit gave server owners a plugin API, and plugins gave them land claims, economies, shops, towns and ranks. Almost every genre on our SMP ranking descends from something a Bukkit plugin made possible.

The other 2010 lineage went the opposite direction. 2b2t opened in December 2010 and, per Wikipedia, is now the oldest anarchy server still running, with over a million unique players on a single never-reset map. The oldest survivors of the era are therefore one server that added every rule it could and one that added none. Both are still up. Both are on our list.

2012 onwards: the whitelisted creator SMP becomes a genre

The plugin servers were public. The next thing to happen to SMP was private. Mindcrack and then Hermitcraft put a whitelisted group of YouTubers into one vanilla-ish survival world and published the result as episodic video, and that turned SMP from a place you played into a thing you watched. The format has outlasted almost everything else in Minecraft video: Hermitcraft's eleventh season began in November 2025, and one Hermit told SuperJump that countless people learned how to play the game from watching the server.

That is the first half of the "why". Creator SMPs taught a generation what a good survival server looks like: shopping districts, long seasons, trust instead of claims, a world with a story. Then those viewers went looking for somewhere public that felt the same, and a good share of the demand on every SMP list is still that search.

2014-2017: the EULA and crossplay reshape the public server

Mojang began enforcing its EULA against pay-to-win servers on 14 June 2014, and Bukkit shut down that August. The enforcement date is disputed in one respect: Miller's timeline places the serious enforcement wave in early 2016, and both readings are defensible. Either way, the effect on SMP was the same. Stores had to stop selling gameplay advantage outright and started selling ranks, cosmetics and boosts instead, and the question every SMP player still asks, whether the store sells time or power, dates from this period. Our wiki page on SMP ranks and stores is the modern version of that test.

Then on 20 September 2017 the Better Together update brought crossplay to Bedrock. Console and phone players had existed in their own world until then. Once translation layers let them onto Java servers, an SMP's potential population roughly doubled, and "Java and Bedrock" became the phrase every server list leads with. We check it ourselves: every entry on our ranking is pinged on port 19132, and the Bedrock SMP servers page lists those that answered.

2020-2023: Dream SMP and the pandemic boom

Dream SMP launched on 24 April 2020, five weeks into the first lockdowns, and turned the creator SMP into scripted drama. Wikipedia records more than thirty characters and twenty-odd narrative eras by mid-2021, guest appearances from MrBeast, Ninja and Pokimane, and Spotify treating "Dream SMP" as a genre label in 2021. On 20 January 2021 a finale stream peaked at about 650,000 concurrent viewers, which Dexerto placed sixth on Twitch's all-time list at the time. The server closed on 10 April 2023 when its members killed the Ender Dragon, and a final conclusion stream ran on 27 October 2024.

The second half of the "why" is here. Dream SMP proved that a survival world could hold a story with stakes that an audience of millions would follow. The genre it spawned, roleplay SMP, is mostly private. But the expectation it created, that an SMP should have factions, history and consequences, is what public servers have been selling ever since. Every semi-anarchy and lifesteal server pitching "your base is a target" is monetising the Dream SMP feeling for people who were never going to get whitelisted.

Lifesteal: survival becomes a stakes game

The newest of the large genres takes that logic to its end. BlockMyth's explainer puts the rule in one sentence: kill another player and you steal a heart, die and you lose one, run out and you are banned, sometimes permanently. It began as a private creator server and became a public genre fast enough that our ranking now carries three lifesteal entries, one of which was into its eleventh season when we pinged it. Our lifesteal mechanics wiki page covers the rule variants.

2023-2026: the public mega-SMP

The last shift is scale. Through the first half of 2026, one semi-anarchy SMP, DonutSMP, was measured by minecraft-stats.com as outdrawing Hypixel on weekly average players every week from early January to late May, before its weekly average fell from 28,020 to 13,076 in the week of 4 June, a drop of about half, per that tracker's 2 July 2026 write-up. The tracker does not name a cause and neither will we. The point for this history is that a single survival world briefly out-populated the largest minigame network in the game, which would have been unthinkable in 2014.

Why players keep choosing SMP

Three reasons, and they map onto the three eras above. Persistence: a survival world remembers what you did, and a minigame does not. Social stakes: other people can help you, trade with you, or take what you built, and every SMP genre is a different setting on that dial, from towny at one end to anarchy at the other. Creator culture: eleven seasons of Hermitcraft and three years of Dream SMP taught players what a survival world could be, and a public SMP is the only place to go and try it. Our number one, TalonMC SMP at play.talonmc.net, sits in the moderated middle of that dial on purpose: land claiming, economy, progression and trading built for the server, with custom abilities, earnable titles and milestone rewards behind them, and a rank on join through /freerank.

Is SMP dying in 2026?

Individual SMPs die constantly, and the reasons are well documented. A 2024 forum thread asking why small SMPs die so easily settled on players rushing through the content and getting bored, owners retiring, and nothing to do after the dragon. An owner-facing guide puts it more bluntly, as an opinion: most SMPs peak in week three. None of that is the format dying. It is the format working as designed, since a survival world with nothing left to lose stops being an SMP and becomes a museum. The servers that last, and the ones on our ranking have mostly lasted years, are the ones that keep adding stakes: seasons, events, an economy with sinks, or in the anarchy case, simply never resetting. The methodology page says how we weigh that.

Frequently asked

When did SMP start in Minecraft?

Survival multiplayer shipped in Alpha v1.0.15 on 3 August 2010, with the standalone server jar following on 4 August. Minecraft had creative-only multiplayer from May 2009, but SMP specifically dates from the August 2010 build.

Why is it called SMP and not just survival?

The term is short for survival multiplayer and was coined alongside SSP, survival singleplayer, before Creative mode existed. Players were already asking why the terms persisted in 2012; the honest answer is that SMP kept describing something real, so it stuck.

What was the Dream SMP and is it still running?

Dream SMP was a private roleplay survival server launched by Dream and GeorgeNotFound on 24 April 2020, which turned the creator SMP into scripted drama for an audience of millions. It closed on 10 April 2023, with a final conclusion stream in October 2024, so you cannot join it; public SMPs such as TalonMC SMP at play.talonmc.net are where that demand goes now.

Can you join Hermitcraft?

No. Hermitcraft is a whitelisted, invite-only server for an established group of creators, and its eleventh season began in November 2025 with returning members only. If you want the feel of it, a claims-based public SMP is the nearest thing, and our ranking labels the genre on every entry.

Why do so many SMP servers die?

Players finish the content and get bored, owners retire, and after the Ender Dragon there is often nothing left to aim at. The servers that last keep adding stakes through seasons, events and an economy with real sinks, which is why TalonMC SMP at play.talonmc.net runs seasonal events and earnable progression rather than a static world.
