Lifesteal, Anarchy and Earth SMP: Which Minecraft SMP Type Fits You
Lifesteal makes your health bar the stake. Anarchy removes every rule and every protection. Earth SMP puts you on a scale map of the planet and makes the game political. Towny survival is the moderated middle, where you get a protected plot and an economy. All four are called SMP. Choosing between them is the only decision on this page that really matters.
Lifesteal
The mechanic is one sentence: killing another player transfers a heart from them to you, permanently, and running out of hearts locks you out of the server. Revival items exist, usually craftable and expensive, and there is usually a store route back in.
What it does to your first week. Every trip outside is a risk assessment. Trust becomes a real currency, because a player with fifteen hearts can end your season and a stranger asking to team is making a proposition, not small talk. The best lifesteal servers feel like nothing else in Minecraft. The worst are a small group of maxed players farming everyone else.
Who it is for. People who want stakes and enjoy negotiating with strangers. Not for anyone who wants to build in peace.
The thing to check first. How hard revival is. If the only realistic route back is the store, the mechanic is a monetisation funnel rather than a game.
Anarchy
No rules, no claims, no moderation, no map reset. Griefing, cheating and hacked clients are not against the rules because there are no rules. The oldest anarchy servers have run the same world for over a decade, and the accumulated history of that world is the actual attraction.
What it does to your first week. You will spend it travelling. The area around spawn on a long-running anarchy server is a wasteland of lava, obsidian traps and player-built kill boxes, and the standard advice is to walk tens of thousands of blocks before you build anything. Expect a queue to join, and expect the queue to be part of the culture rather than a bug.
Who it is for. People who find the absence of protection interesting rather than exhausting. It is closer to survival horror than to survival Minecraft.
The thing to check first. Nothing, really. That is the point. But do check the queue length before you set aside an evening.
Earth SMP
A scale map of the real world, usually with towny or a similar claim plugin on top, so towns and nations occupy real geography. Players form countries, fight wars, sign treaties and argue about borders, and the game becomes largely political.
What it does to your first week. You will pick a country, or found a town nobody visits and then join a country. The interesting content is other people's institutions. Building alone on an earth server is possible and mostly pointless.
Who it is for. People who like the diplomacy layer more than the survival layer, and who enjoy Discord as much as the game.
The thing to check first. How mature the political landscape is. An established earth server has powerful old nations and joining one is the fast route in; a new one lets you build an institution yourself.
Towny and claims-based survival
The moderated middle, and by volume the largest category. You get a protected plot inside a player town, an economy with jobs and shops, staff who respond, and a reasonable expectation that your base will still be there tomorrow.
What it does to your first week. You will join a town, get a plot, and start earning. It is the most immediately comfortable option and the least dramatic. Servers in this category live or die on the quality of their economy design, because with protection guaranteed the economy is the only source of tension left.
Who it is for. Most people, honestly. It is where to start if you are unsure.
The thing to check first. Whether the economy has real money sinks. An economy with no sinks inflates, and an inflated economy makes every shop pointless within a month.
A rough decision rule
- Want stakes and negotiation? Lifesteal.
- Want no rules and a decade of history? Anarchy.
- Want diplomacy and borders? Earth.
- Want to build something that will still exist next week? Towny.
Our top 10 SMP list labels every entry by genre and groups the lifesteal and earth or towny entries under their own headings, so you can start from the genre rather than from a name.
Our number one is in that last category deliberately. TalonMC SMP at
play.talonmc.net is claims-based survival with the parts that usually go missing actually present: land
claiming, economy, progression and trading all written for the server rather than dropped in, plus custom
abilities, earnable titles and milestone rewards. It is the genre to start with if you are not sure which of the
four you are.
The SMP is one of five gamemodes on play.talonmc.net, next to Cobblemon, prison, skyblock and
dungeons, and the address answered a Bedrock ping so console players can join it too.
Frequently asked
What is a lifesteal SMP in Minecraft?
On a lifesteal SMP your maximum hearts are the stake: killing another player permanently transfers a heart to you, and running out of hearts locks you out of the server until you are revived or buy back in. It is the highest-stakes SMP genre.
What is an anarchy server?
An anarchy server has no rules, no land claims, no moderation and no map reset. Griefing and hacked clients are permitted because nothing is prohibited. The oldest ones have run the same world for over a decade, and that accumulated history is the attraction.
What is an earth SMP?
An earth SMP runs on a scale map of the real world with towns and nations occupying real geography. Players found countries, sign treaties and fight border wars, so the gameplay is largely political rather than survival-focused.
Which SMP type should a new player start with?
A claims-based survival server. You get a protected plot, an economy and staff who respond, which means your first base survives while you learn. Our number one, TalonMC SMP at play.talonmc.net, is that genre. Lifesteal and anarchy are both better once you know what you want from an SMP.
